MORRISTOWN, NJ (Expansionary News Service) August 18 2002. On Monday, August 26, 2002, 9:30 AM (10:30 AM EDT) internationally-acclaimed sociologist/futurist Dr. Michael G. Zey will make a return appearance on KCMO-AM’s Mike Murphy Show to discuss “Why the Future Hasn’t Happened.”
During the 1-hour program Dr. Zey will describe the role politics and economics are playing in slowing and even preventing the introduction of new technologies such as high-speed trains, broadband communications, nuclear fusion, genetically-modified foods, and other leading-edge technologies.
Speaking from his Morristown office, the futurist/sociologist states that “over the last few decades, America has made little progress in developing new forms of transportation and energy”. He claims that “our trains and planes are no faster than they were 30 years ago, and we’re still dependent on oil.”
Zey is a proponent of the “expansionary” philosophy, a strongly pro-growth and pro-progress perspective which some consider controversial, others find inspiring. Dr. Zey has developed and promoted the Expansionary perspective in his current book The Future Factor: The Five Forces Transforming Our Lives and Shaping Human Destiny (McGraw-Hill), and Seizing the Future (Simon and Schuster/Transaction).
Michael Zey is especially concerned that life-extension technologies, such as genetic engineering and therapeutic cloning, will have problems reaching the public. According to Zey, “many people and groups oppose extending the human life span to 120 years or more, for a variety of economic and ideological reasons”
However, Dr. Zey, in spite of such resistance, “necessity will overcome ideology”--society’s need for energy, food, transportation, as well as a desire for a long and healthy life, will eventually mandate that society adopt these technologies.
