MORRISTOWN, NJ (Expansionary News Service) July 15, 2002. On Sunday, July 21, 2002, at the World Future Society conference held at the Loew’s Philadelphia Hotel, Dr. Michael G. Zey will deliver his speech, “WHY THE FUTURE HASN’T HAPPENED: How Politics, Ideology, and Economics Can Sabotage Technological Progress”.
Internationally-acclaimed sociologist/futurist Dr. Michael G. Zey, author of the controversial and inspiring book, The Future Factor: The Five Forces Transforming Our Lives and Shaping Human Destiny (McGraw-Hill), has some startling insights into why many promising technologies find unexpected resistance.
According to Zey, nuclear fusion development is stymied by economic interests that view this new form of energy production as a threat to established energy sources such as oil and coal. High-speed rail must contend with opposition from the airlines and representatives of other transportation modalities. Moreover, the zero-growth anti-technology group challenges these and other innovations such as genetically-modified foods on purely ideological and philosophical grounds.
However, Dr. Zey, a leading proponent of the nascent pro-growth Expansionary philosophy, will demonstrate that in spite of such resistance, “necessity will overcome ideology”--society’s need for energy, food, and transportation will eventually mandate that society adopt these technologies.
