The hottest regions for fourth-quarter IT sector hiring will be the East South Central and Mid-Atlantic states, according to a survey released Wednesday.
The survey, conducted by placement firm Robert Half Technology, found that of the 1,400-plus CIOs polled, those in the East South Central region (Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Tennessee) are the most optimistic about fourth-quarter hiring increases, with 15% planning to expand their staffs. Only 3% foresee cutbacks. According to Robert Half, the hottest jobs for the region are in .Net administration and development.
Tech job prospects in the Mid-Atlantic region (New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania) are also above average, with an 11% hiring increase predicted. Hot job areas include application developers and database designers, particularly in finance, insurance, and health care.
The weakest prospects lay in the East North Central (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin) and West North Central (Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North, South Dakota) regions, with anemic hiring-growth projections of 4% and 3%, respectively.
The traditionally tech-job-friendly Pacific region (California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Hawaii) was pegged to show hiring growth of 7% for the quarter, barely ahead of the net national average.
There's some good news for those now employed, though: There's a solid nationwide CIO attitude that current IT workforce levels are unlikely to be reduced.
Overall, Windows administration remains the skillset most in demand across all regions
