JetTrain Locomotive Rolls into Tampa: Inaugural Visit to Florida by the High-Speed Rail Locomotive

TAMPA, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--10/15/2003--The Bombardier(i) JetTrain(i) high-speed rail locomotive arrives in Tampa today. The latest in "Made in America" high-speed technology will be on display for public viewing this afternoon at Tampa Union Station, where hundreds of visitors are expected to take a look at the future of passenger rail transportation.

The JetTrain locomotive is the first non-electric, high-speed rail solution designed specifically for the American market. Powered by a jet engine, JetTrain technology operates at 150 miles per hour and meets all American safety standards for high-speed rail. "JetTrain technology is U.S. certified, ready to roll now," stated Lecia Stewart, Vice-President, High-Speed Rail for Bombardier Transportation, North America.

Today's public viewing will take place at Tampa Union Station, 601 N. Nebraska Ave., from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Last Saturday, in Orlando, hundreds of citizens attended a similar public viewing of the JetTrain locomotive.

Fluor Corporation and Bombardier Transportation have provided the Florida High Speed Rail Authority (FHSRA) with a proposal to launch Phase I, Part 1 of a Florida high-speed passenger rail service between Tampa and Orlando. This first planned route will carry more than 4 million passengers a year.

The team's bid has been evaluated independently by the FHSRA as 36 per cent more advantageous to taxpayers than the competing proposal, offering $430 million in savings over the life of the project. Net costs will average only $42 million per year, not much more than the cost of a single highway interchange. The authority is expected to make its selection of the preferred bidder on October 27. The next phase of the Florida high-speed rail system will connect Orlando and Miami, and carry an estimated 10 million passengers annually.

The Bombardier JetTrain locomotive is the result of a public-private development partnership that began in 1998 between Bombardier Transportation and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) in the United States.
