PHOENIX (AP) - An international biotechnology institute that will research cancer cures will base its headquarters in Phoenix, Gov. Jane Hull announced Wednesday.
The center will be called the Translational Genomics Research Institute. A consortium of 18 universities and medical research groups plan to translate knowledge gained from the sequencing of the human genome into medical cures for cancer and other diseases.
Private and public sources in Arizona have raised about $90 million dollars to establish the center.
Hull said it will make Arizona a hub for the emerging biotechnology industry, bringing talent and new opportunities into the state.
Dr. Jeffrey Trent, scientific director of the National Genome Research Institute in Bethesda, Md., is to relocate and become the center's president.
